Finding a Room in Ventura

• A WorldWeb.com Travel Guide for Ventura, CA, California.
The hustle and bustle of Los Angeles can be left behind when visitors drive into Ventura, California, just 65 mi (105 km) north of the City of Angels. Ventura is a paradise, nestled in a valley between the Ventura and Santa Clara rivers. This is a small community, since it was not easily accessible until a freeway was built in the 1920s. The city boasts spectacular scenery and fantastic weather, making it into a weekend destination for city dwellers and a burgeoning tourist destination for those traveling along California’s coastline.

Visitors come to Ventura for many reasons, but primarily for recreation and relaxation. Ventura is the gateway Los Padres National Forest to the north and the stunning Channel Islands National Park to the east in the Pacific Ocean. Sports enthusiasts often kayak across the channel to reach the islands, though boat tours depart frequently. For those who want to enjoy Ventura at a more relaxed pace, there is plenty of entertainment in the city including gourmet restaurants, cultural attractions, and fun events throughout the year. Visitors coming to Ventura will find many accommodation options, including a large number of hotels.

STAYING IN TOWN CENTER

Town center is situated just northeast of the Ventura Freeway, across from Emma Wood State Beach, Promenade Park and Surfers Point Park, which is well known to have some of the best surfing in Southern California. Downtown is the place to stay for those that are interested in the city's historical and cultural activities, primary attractions include the Mission San Buenaventura, city hall, museums, and galleries. Most downtown hotels are found between East Thompson Boulevard and East Main Street, between Ventura Avenue and Fir Street. This area is a hub of activity during the day and at night. There are plenty of opportunities for retail therapy in the mix of simple thrifts stores to high-end boutiques as well as numerous cafes and restaurants.

Accommodations in town center are primarily mid-range establishments as well as a few budget-friendly hotels. Many are built in classic adobe style with charming whitewashed walls and red-tiled roofs, in particular, the Clocktower Inn. It is a historic building, originally a fire hall that was converted when the city outgrew the small building. Like other hotels in the area, the Clocktower Inn offers a wide range of amenities include a hearty breakfast and a free high-speed connection.

STAYING ON THE HARBOUR

The Ventura Harbor is constant hub of activity, as a working harbor as well as a destination for entertainment. Shops lining the promenade are full of arts and crafts made by local artisans and seafood restaurants on the pier are popular for serving the fresh catch of the day. Commuter boats to Channel Islands National Park depart from the harbor daily, as well as private tour boats run by companies that take visitors on guided scenic and wildlife tours of the area.

Ventura’s most picturesque hotels have been built on the waterfront, primarily along East Harbor Boulevard within a few steps of San Buenaventura State Beach. All hotels offer a wide array of services and amenities for the comfort of guests, even the economy hotels include air conditioning and recreational facilities such as gyms and pools. Hotel staff  are also happy to provide visitors with information about the area, plan the day’s activities and arrange tours.
